Name: Victor Kauffman
Nickname: Archaea
Age: Appears to be 19
Gender: Contains X & Y Chromosomes
Hair: Raven black, preserved in a fairly neat style putting most wigs to shame utterly.
Eyes: Eyes that seem inorganic or artificial due to the glasses he wears, but even without them the colour and general emotional vibe touches others with the glance of a scientist. The colour itself actually changes with retinal absorption from ~400 ( Violet) to ~750(red) in nanometers.
Weight: Average
Height: Average
Body Type: Made up of Eukaryotic cells, causing him to be a multi-cellular organism and thusly different from unicellular organisms like bacteria. These eukaryotic cells have a complex internal structure, making them larger than simple prokaryotes and are characterized by the presence of organelles. Held together by cells possessing a strong Cytoskeleton created from protein fibers. Of the three protein fibers, microfilaments and Microtubules are involved in cell division. This Cytoskeleton determines the shape of his cells and anchors organelles. At the center of it all is a nucelus that houses his genetic material surrounded by a nuclear envelope consisting of two membranes and contains the nucleolus which is responsible for making Ribosomal RNA.
Skin Type: Containing carotenoids, this protects against damage by light. However to maintain this he must obtain them through diet.
Physical Appearance: Someone like Victor is best viewed under a microscope, as he has often said himself. If another scientist looked at him this way they would find that his genetic material has the crucial characteristics of Replication for doubling into daughter cells, Storange and especially Expression since they carry instructions for making and controlling, but most of all might be his potential for variation which means he can change via mutation.
Special Features: Creepy eyes. Cell Division.(Any special talents or markings? Any tattoos?)
Country: A small Resort Town.
Photo: (Any recent photos of your character?)
Occupation: Biology major at the Toluca Community College.
Clothes:
Normal Outfit- Science student garb. With a white labcoat at all times while awake and wearing various clothes underneath.
Cell Membrane- Physical boundary of the cell. Within this compartment is the cytoplasm, of which the fluid portion is called the cytosol.
(What do they wear? Describe their clothing or provide a photo link.)
Weapons:
Phosphodiester- A sword capable of bonding together nucleotides in anything it touches.
Enzymes- These biological catalysts lower the activation energy required for a specific chemical reactions to proceed about a million to a billion times faster than a chemical reaction without the enzyme. Metabolic pathways requiring a chain of related chemical reactions need these specified enzymes to function properly. While not making the impossible possible, they do remain unchanged for unlimited reusage. An active site works under a lock & key mechanism while the Allosteric binds the effector. Competitive inhibitors go to the active site so substrates cannot bind while noncompetitive inhibitors bind at the allosteric site to change the enzyme's shape so the substrate cannot bind.
Lysosomes- Contain enzymes that breakdown biological molecules in the function of the intracellular digestion of worn out cellular components and substances taken into the cells.
Thykaloid Membrane- Contains a water splitting enzyme which pushes hydrogen ions out into the thykaloid H2O ---------> 1/2 O2 + 2H++ 2e-
Items:
Vacuoles- Storage organelles used in animals used for transport.
Mitochondria- The powerhouse of the cell which produces energy from organic molecules. Surrounded by two membranes, this is found in all Eukaryotes. Acetyl coA is even formed in the mitochondrial matrix. The krebs cycle and OXIDATIVE PHOSPHORYLATION take place here as well.
First Aid Kit- Syringes among other items.
(Do they have an special possessions they like to carry with them?)
Personality: (How to people see them? How do they really feel on the inside? )
Likes: Ghost towns. Biology.
Dislikes: Viruses.
Relationships: (Do they have a family? Friends? Lovers? Pets?)
History:
Supposedly he was created by a scientist of sorts who followed recipes left behind by the devoted followers of occult alchemists who believed in spontaneous regeneration. For thousands of years, people believed that certain living organisms could develop from nonliving or decomposing organic matter. Aristotle proposed animals may arise from lifeless matter through the intervention of a "soul" which is a property of the four elements. This remained unchallenged until Redi partially dispproved it using his unique expieriment involving meat in jars and flies.
However, Leeuwenhoek's discovery of animolecules renewed the debate on spontaneous generation. After this came the final blow from Louis Pasteur's Organic infusions boiled in swan-necked flasks and exposed to unheated, untreated and unfiltered air remain sterile.
His edict: "Only life can produce life."
Later on in the first few years of the 20th Century, it became known that chromosomes housed genetic material. However Chromosomes contained both DNA & protein, leading to a debate over which one was the genetic material. At first proteins were favoured since they had 20 amino acids while there were only 4 bases in DNA. However a series of elegant expieriments resulted in the correct indentification.
[shadow=red,left,300]Frederick Grifith[/shadow] studied Streptococus pneumoniae, the bacterium which causes pneumonia. It existed in two strains: the S- Strain which had a capsule while the R-strain did not. This capsule protected the bacterium from the animals immune system. Using innocent mice as his test subjects he concluded that an unknown agent from the heat-killed S-strain was actually changing the R-Strain into an infectious type and ingeniously named this phenomenon transformation and the called agent itself the transforming principle. Something Victor Kauffman would later on grow to hate.
[shadow=orange,left,300]Oswald Avery[/shadow] followed in those footsteps performing experiments on the transforming principle without killing mice by converting rough bacteria to smooth bacteria inside a culture tube. The use of enzymes called DNase WHICH DESTROY DNA identified the transforming principle as DNA through showing that without DNA, the rough bacteria could not transform from rough to smooth.
However, [shadow=yellow,left,300]Martha Chase[/shadow] & [shadow=green,left,300]Alfred Hershey[/shadow] studied bacteriophage T2 which is a virus that attacks Ecoli and found the structure consisted of a head that contains DNA and is surrounded by a protein coat attached to a Tail and fibers made up entirely of protein. Using [glow=green,2,300]RADIOACTIVE ELEMENTS[/glow] to differentially label the protein and DNA of the phage since
Discovering DNA's structure turned into a different matter altogether with it becoming one of the most important scientific discoveries of all time.
Erwin Chargoff observed that depsite the differences in species there was a peculiar regularity where Purines binded to Pyrimidines, Adenine to Thymine, and Cyanine to Guanine. These became known as Chargoff's rules.
Rosalind Franklin took X-ray photographs of DNA crystals and determined that DNA was a helical structure with regular repititions along its axis.
James Watson and Francis Crick did not actually perform any experiments of their own, but instead put all of the existing information on DNA together. Publishing their paper on April 25th 1953, it was only one page long.
" We wish to suggest a sructure for the salt of Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid. This structure has novel features which are of considerable biological interest."
"This structure has two helical chains each coiled around the same axis."
What does this have to do with Victor?
Everything, considering these things are the reaon he among all other organisms exist the way they do in the world today. Looking for information about his family past here won't do any good at all. Only the fact known for certain is that his father was a hospital Physician, with no known information about his mother.
If he has one.
Current Status: Studying abroad.
Level: (Current level)
Race: Chemoheterotroph
Familiar: Prokaryote. Plant.
Familiar Abilities:
Prokaryote- Nucleiod not surrounded by a membrance, but instead a cell wall made up of protein and sugar to provide protection. Attaches to surfaces with Capsule and Pili while moving with Flagella. Survives through Anaerobic respiration.
Plant- Has the ability of photosynthesis. It is carried out in the internal enzymes embedded in the internal membranes of cyanobacteria and chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are the sites of photosynthesis with an inner compartment called the stroma. Uses purple sulfur bacteria grown on its leaves offensively. During photosynthesis the photons are captured by chlorophyl then transfered and stored in bulky ATP. ATP contributes its energy to convert CO2 and H2O into glucose. It has these two energy molecules since ATP cannot be made all the time or reach some parts of plant. Subject to light driven reactions and carbon fixation.
See Figure 6.5
Abilities:
Biological Marvel- Able to know the exact location of every last atom in his body at any given time. It is debated whether or not he can direct voluntary or involuntary cellular activity.
Forced Physics- Victor has the ability to be affected not only by gravitation. This continues with electromagnetic forces, plus strong and weak nuclear forces.
Energy- Able to do work and bring about change. Possesses both potential and kinetic energy. His energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.
Thermodynamic System- Victor is classified as an open system, meaning he can exchange mass and energy with his surroundings unlike the closed system of a thermus.
Entropy- Intuitively able to determine the measure of disorder in a system by a single glance.
Dogma of RTMTP- Not exactly the movie with a Ben Affleck Bartlby. Instead tthe centeral Dogma portains to the flow of information in a cell for DNA. First DNA starts replication before going into transcription on the mRNA that gets translated into protein. RTMTP!
Nucleotides- To cause a nucleotide to even occur, Victor's body must ensure there is a phosphate along with the base & the sugar. Otherwise it will become a nucleoside instead. On top of that to keep the Nucleotide bonded together, he must use the sword Phosphodiester.
Flagella- Not found in plant cells, these consist of Microtubules which are long but few in number. Used for movement of an entire cell.
Cilia- Also not found in plant cells and consisting of Microtubules, these short and numerous tendrils are used for movement of substances across the cell surface.
Glucose Metabolism- Provides energy in safe and usable amounts. If not controlled the energy will become DESTRUCTIVE. However this process is only 40% efficent. The net yield of one glucose molecule is 2 Pyruvate, 2 ATP's, 2 NADH and 2 H+ ions. The small steps used to harvest the energy is the exact reverse of Photosynthesis. [glow=red,2,300]Glycolysis takes place in the Cytosol in the absence of O2.[/glow] See Figure 6.10
